Youth Exchange ECOMIND
EcoMind is an Erasmus+ youth exchange bringing together young people from Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, North Macedonia, and Czech Republic to explore environmental sustainability through non-formal education. Based in Bansko, Bulgaria form 07 - 17 December 2024. This transformative project empowers participants to become eco-ambassadors in their communities through interactive workshops, collaborative projects, and cultural exchange.
As part of our Erasmus+ Accreditation journey, Association VIDIN FUND proudly presents EcoMind, an international youth exchange hosted in Bansko, Bulgaria. This transformative project brought together 36 young participants from Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, North Macedonia, and the Czech Republic to address environmental challenges through cross-cultural collaboration.
In the picturesque mountain town of Bansko, Bulgaria, something remarkable has been unfolding. Young minds from six European countries have gathered for EcoMind, an innovative Erasmus+ youth exchange designed to cultivate environmental awareness and inspire sustainable action.
This project, a key milestone in our organization's Erasmus+ accreditation journey, was born from a pressing need: to equip young Europeans with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to address environmental challenges in their local communities and beyond.
A diverse community united for change
From day one, ECOMIND created a vibrant international community. Participants from Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, North Macedonia, and the Czech Republic quickly moved beyond cultural differences to form meaningful connections through team-building activities, shared meals, and open dialogues. This foundation of trust proved essential for the collaborative work ahead.
From knowledge to action
The program followed a carefully designed learning trajectory. Beginning with workshops on climate change science, ecological footprints, and the Sustainable Development Goals, participants gained crucial foundational knowledge. Interactive sessions and field visits to local sustainability initiatives transformed abstract concepts into tangible realities.
The project's intercultural dimension added invaluable depth to the environmental focus. Evening cultural presentations showcased not only traditional music, food, and customs, but also highlighted each country's unique environmental contexts and challenges. Participants discovered that while climate issues manifest differently across regions, collaborative approaches yield the most innovative solutions.
A Legacy of Impact
As EcoMind concludes, it leaves behind more than memories. Participants return home as environmental ambassadors equipped with practical tools, international connections, and renewed motivation to create positive change. The digital resources developed during the project will be freely available online, extending EcoMind's impact far beyond the participants themselves.
This project exemplifies the power of Erasmus+ to foster both personal development and social impact. Through bringing together diverse perspectives in an immersive learning environment, EcoMind has planted seeds of environmental consciousness that will continue to grow across Europe.
EcoMind completely transformed my relationship with environmental activism. Before, I felt overwhelmed by climate issues, but now I have concrete tools and an international support network to create change in my community."
Sofija, Serbia

The most valuable aspect was learning from diverse perspectives. Environmental challenges look different in Turkey compared to the Czech Republic, but through collaboration, we discovered innovative approaches that work across contexts.
Preslav, Bulgaria

I never expected how powerful the intercultural exchange would be. Learning about traditional ecological practices from different countries expanded my understanding of sustainability beyond textbooks and media.
Alexandru, Romania

The hands-on workshops and field visits made abstract concepts real. Seeing local sustainability initiatives in action convinced me that small-scale projects can create meaningful impact.
Nehir, Turkey

"EcoMind taught me that environmental action doesn't have to be perfect to be valuable. Starting small, collaborating widely, and learning continuously are the keys to creating sustainable change.
Viktorija, North Macedonia
The project gave me both practical skills and emotional motivation. I've returned home with specific plans to engage my local youth center in environmental education projects.
Klára, Czech Republic

The diversity of perspectives proved to be EcoMind's greatest strength. When brainstorming solutions for plastic pollution, the Turkish team's experience with beach clean-ups complemented the Czech approach to consumer education, resulting in comprehensive strategies none could have developed alone.
Evenings filled with cultural sharing deepened connections. Traditional Bulgarian folk dancing gave way to Romanian storytelling, which transitioned to North Macedonian games. Through these exchanges, participants discovered how deeply environmental values are embedded in cultural traditions across Europe.
The project wasn't without challenges. Intense discussions about environmental responsibility occasionally revealed differing viewpoints. Yet participants discovered that navigating these differences constructively was precisely the skill needed for environmental advocacy in diverse communities.
A diverse community united for change
As the project concluded, the transformation was evident. The shy Serbian participant who had barely spoken during the first days confidently presented her team's awareness campaign to the entire group. The skeptical Bulgarian who questioned whether youth initiatives could make a difference was now planning a community garden project.
The EcoMind story continues today through dozens of local initiatives across Europe, all connected by a shared experience in the Bulgarian mountains. What began as a two-week project has evolved into a lasting movement, proving that when diverse minds unite for a common cause, the impact reverberates far beyond expectations.
